LORD, help me!

It appears (and I emphasize appears) that over recent months just about everything that I have been involved in has gone wrong.  Every endeavour, no matter how well intentioned, has not gone according to plan.  There have been relational problems both in and out of the church.  There has been financial and health problems.  Even the good things have been criticised and called into question.  Guess what?  I was feeling sorry for myself, full of self-pity.  My mood was down.  Obviously, I felt righteous and hard done by because all the others were wrong and just didn’t understand!

God in His patient mercy even in depression speaks to us.  I decided to take some time out to fast and pray along with a few brethren.  During this time I went to the local park to commune with nature and feed the ducks.  In addition, I studied the scriptures and listened to a few sermons from a number of preachers on various subjects, as well as taking counsel with a few close friends.

A number of things were highlighted to me during my time of contemplation.  Colossians 3:12 rang in my ears and reminded me of who I and others are who believe in Jesus.  Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.  We are chosen, holy and loved by God.  Just think how great it is that God has called us and blessed us with His Spirit.  I repeat God choose YOU and ME!

My heart and mind began to change toward myself and others.  Again I just had to praise God for His grace. But He was not finished yet.  He said look at my Son upon the cross, He suffered unto death for all.  He was pure love, but his every action and motive was questioned.  He was called every evil name under the sun.  He was misunderstood, ridiculed and rejected.  Do you expect any less? Of course, my humanity replies that I want an easy life. It’s not fair! I’m doing this for you Lord.

Saint Augustine responds, “When we look at his cross, we understand his love. His head is bent down to kiss us. His hands are extended to embrace us. His heart is wide open to receive us.”

So my prayer this Easter season is Lord help me. Please join me in this request. Help me Father to pick up my cross and follow Jesus to the end no matter what.  Our Lord through your Spirit fill my heart with joy and confidence, my body with strength and my mind with wisdom for the journey. Help me in my unbelief and frailty. My life is in your wonderful nailed pierced hands.  Amen.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.  In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.  1 Peter 1:3-7

May this Holy Season bring a blessing to God’s people that we will take to a needy world.


Change the world at Christmas!

In just a short time the world over, we will be celebrating Christmas. It is worthy, great, fun and necessary for us to have times of celebrating.  They serve as a times of reminder because we have a tendency to forget or be casual about things.

So at these times (and others) we come together to review, rehearse and prepare for our future. No, I am not ignoring the negative aspects of such times, commercialism, hard work, secularism, loneliness, etc, etc, etc.  But we as Christians never forget the reasons for our gratitude to God and responsibility to mankind.  A saying comes to mind which says something like, "help one person and you have helped/changed the world." It's not always about the big things or how others may treat them!

Yes, we can with God's help change the world this Christmas and New Year. What is our hope for 2008? Just as a baby was born to a virgin around 2000 years ago who changed everything for everyone what is been birthed in us today?  He was a gift from heaven to the whole of creation.  He also came bearing gifts, which include healing the broken hearted, setting the captives free and bringing good news. Jesus came and through the Spirit has empowered us to be world changers.  He starts with us where we are and works outwards, from our heart, soul, body and mind to the world, near and far.

As we celebrate in thankfulness and think about gifts retain the right and true focus.  We have freely received so much so we must freely give.  As Jesus said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive."  We all have something that we can give that is off value to us but in giving it away will enrich both the giver and the recipient!  Ask God, "What should I give?" When you receive your response then simply obey. Once you have made your decision follow through.

Sometimes as we make our sacrifice it is not always well received or we see little positive fruit come from it.  But that initial feeling or reaction must not deter us from giving good gifts.  Remember, that God has given us the best gifts through Himself.  One scripture which speaks to our soul and motivation is, "the faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of truth, the gospel that has come to you." Colossians 1:5-6a NIV.

Gifts of God to us include the Gospel, good news indeed.  Also, faith, hope and love (charity).  It is secured in heaven but administered on earth by ordinary people like you and me. We are privileged in scripture to be called "saints."  So how can we give the best gifts and change the world at this season and beyond?  The answer - by living the gospel.  Its riches will flow out of us through God's grace and bear eternal fruit in those with whom we have contact.  It is a win-win situation that brings glory to our Father.

In this process we rejoice and are glad but like Mary we are humbled that the great God chooses us to be His visible body to change the world.  We are blest so we can bring a blessing. We are made powerful so we can bring new life. We walk with people who God loves and who are just like us.  The Apostle Paul reminds us, "Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm. 2 Corinthians 1:4.

So let us be active co-workers with God making Christmas and the New Year a period of true thankfulness and the giving of honour.  May many be brought to glory through grace and truth in Jesus' name.


Let God fill in the blank

Like many people sometimes I’m lonely feeling that no one cares or understands.  As a result I place unrealistic expectations on my family, friends, brethren, colleagues and even on God. I get down and become inward looking.  At this time of year those feelings can be intensified if you are distressed, depressed, in a position of authority or responsibility.  All around us it seems people are excited, happy, have it all and planning for the festivities but no one knows my troubles, aspirations, etc., etc., etc.

This morning while praying I was reviewing 2004 and looking forward to 2005.  I was looking at my life, the ups and downs, the blessings, the trials, opportunities taken and those missed. I was contemplating my dreams for the year ahead and trying to get a grip on some of my fears and the obstacles that may be encountered. My thoughts turned to and focused on many of my relationships and responsibilities.

A few words came to me while talking with God and so I prayed the following:

LOVE,    LEARN,    LEAD,    LIVE,    LAST.

Father, help me to love as you do and demonstrated in sending your Son to us.

I need help to love my wife, children, family, friends, colleagues - all my “neighbours.”

Father, continue to be my teacher and help me be a humble disciple.

I need help to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus to please Him and help others.

Father, let your Holy Spirit be my guide and assist me lead those under my charge.

I need help to lead with integrity moving people closer to Our LORD.

Father, thank you for the life you give and let me truly live soaring like an eagle.

I need help to live as the conquering saint of God not a timid defeated person.

Father, you are the First and Last, let me cooperate in your writing my story.

I need help to endure to the end despite all that seems to suggest otherwise.

As we celebrate let us remember the words of Our Saviour in Matthew 22:37-39 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'…And the second is like it: `Love your neighbor as yourself.'  The best gift we must give this Christmas is love (to those who can’t repay or expect it) and the best resolution we can make is to be alive for Christ in 2005.

Let’s give ourselves to God, not be self-obsessed.  Pray with me that His will be done in our mind and heart so we will be his voice, hands and eyes to a needy ……….. (Let God fill in the blank).


Grief

This year a number of my friends have experienced the joy of the birth of a child and the grief of the lost of a parent. Others have married and some divorced or separated.  It is easy to celebrate and extremely difficult to comfort those who suffer a loss.  In the case of the later what do you say, do or the converse not say or do!

A few things one can do are to pray, support, send a card, listen and stay in touch.

Death is something we all have to face but wish to ignore.  It is something we feel ackward about but know it will come to all of us sooner or later.  We view it as something that is unnatural to our human experience and try to fight it.  Death is a part of life.  Nature shows us that life comes from death.  Many have similar feelings about divorce.

When someone suffers lost they need friends especially after the funeral or separation.  They will experience varying emotions – anger, grief, frustration, etc, etc, etc.  What is really needed is comfort, which God alone can give.  We must strive to be His comforters in their new phase of life without their loved one. 

It does not mean having all the answers, repeating the old clichés or leaving it to someone else. It does mean making time for that person on their terms without making judgements and loving them.

A couple of friends sent me this which may help (I’m unable to confirm the quotes source).

People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. When you know which one it is, you will know what to do for that person. When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are.  They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something! to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away.  Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

Some people come into your life for a SEASON, because your turn has come to share, grow or learn. They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it, it is real.  But only for a season.

LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons, things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life.

Remember that God is sovereign.  Ask for His help to offer and receive friendship.

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:

2 a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot,

3 a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build,

4 a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,

5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain,

6 a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away,

7 a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak,

8 a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.

A Crown of Righteousness

Like many people I have been watching the Olympics in Greece on TV.  Despite the rumours, concerns and scandals the venue was ready and people from all around the globe were present in Athens for this spectacle of human endeavour and imagination.

In watching it a number of things struck me so I would like to highlight some. My focus will be on the dedication and motivation of the athletes contrasting it with our spiritual journey.  

There was one country that only had one competitor so he also had the honour of being the flag bearer.  A couple of other nations had over 300 participants.  But all had trained, competed and worked for at least four years to be where they are now.  One British swimmer said he had trained for 18 years and this year got his bronze medal.  All were filled with anticipation, excitement and a few butterflies in the stomach.

Regardless of winning or losing a large emphasis was placed on the spirit of the games, the importance of teamwork and discipline.  One person said they put in 35 hours of training a week.  This was in addition to his full time job.  They had to watch their diet.  Each person, their coach, family and friends had to make numerous sacrifices for years so they would be in peak condition physically, emotionally, mentally and even spiritually. It could be in a 10 second 100 metres or a 3-hour marathon. 

Their desire was to do their best, represent their country and share the experience with others while promoting their particular event.  We watch with awe the graceful gymnasts, stroking swimmers, rhythmic rowers, etc, etc, etc.  We share their pride while anthems are played and medals bestowed.   Equally, we empathise when dreams are shattered and all their hard work in vain.

We as God’s people in this life are in training but as the Apostle Paul tells us not for a crown that perishes and we are all winners.  Jesus is our Coach.  He has made the sacrifice for us to give us entry into His Kingdom. He is the One who is full of grace and truth with many blessings.  He is the author and finisher of our faith. He is our shield, strength, and the rostrum on which we stand for our reward.  The anthem is played to the King of Kings and we join in the singing of the heavenly chorus.

Not just a few are called and the majority watching.  We are all given a divine invitation, commissioned and empowered to do our Fathers work by the Holy Spirit.  The labour of love that we perform will not be in vain; it will impact others and please God.  Our team is the disciples of Jesus Christ, the Church of the Living God and the Body of Christ.

The audience that observes us is firstly in heaven and then those around us.  So train hard so we will not be an embarrassment in life. Join with the Apostle Paul in writing to Timothy said, “ I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept my faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing,” 2 Timothy 4: 7-8.


A few questions and thoughts

In a busy 21-century our lives are full, we seem to have little time left for anything.  We work hard whether we are in employment or not.  People are tired, stressed, over committed and desire an easy life.  All the things that are supposed to free up time and add to our quality of life seem to make little real difference.

Jesus told us in John 10:10 that He came to give us life that is abundant, “life in its fullest measure” (CJB).  What has happened to us who believe and live in this stifling culture?  Again we read in John 15:9-11, “Just as my Father has loved me, I too have loved you; so stay in my love.  If you keep my commands, you will stay in my love-just as I have kept my Father’s commands and stay in his love. I have said this to you so that my joy may be in you, and your joy be complete (CJB).

‘As progressive and growing beings, we are all battered by outward circumstances that feel like they could destroy us.  We easily come to believe that we have no control over these conditions.  However, through right attitudes and godly beliefs we can squeeze out of these circumstances all the hidden good they have to offer.  They can be our teachers not our tormentors.’

It is easy to feel guilty, because instead of us through the Holy Spirit influencing the world, the spirit of this age is affecting us.  Remember, that God loves you and I in all the complexity, anxiety and shortcomings that is in our lives.  With God’s help give to Him all we can.  Each of us must work out with Him each day and in every situation what can be done.

Over the last few weeks a few questions and thoughts have been going around my head which may help.  These are based on the changing circumstances in my life, some of the material I have been reading and conversations with a number of people.

1)      Have I forgotten how to dream?

2)      Lord teach me how to pray.

3)      How much does church mean to me?

4)      How am I using my Christ given freedom?

5)      Who will be my ‘Joshua?’

6)      Have I forgotten how to have fun?

The replies will vary from person to person but I wish to give a few comments to assist in your analysis.  Each of us is uniquely created in the image of God with certain desires, needs and hopes.  Bring them all to Him and be honest.  Ask God to freshen up our prayer life and that it not be stale or stalled.  Is our church attendance a chore or a joy? Does my life reflect the glory of God in every dimension?  Each of us need as part of our life to be responsible for training someone up in the Lord.  Remember to have fun and try to bring some into the life of our “neighbour.”

Eugene Peterson, the author of the Message, said, “All the persons of faith I know are sinners, doubters, uneven performers.  We are secure not because we are sure of ourselves but because we trust that God is sure of us.”  Jesus tells us in John 14:1, “Don’t let yourselves be disturbed.  Trust in God and trust in me” (CJB).


Responding with head and heart

We all need help because we are weak in some area (most of us in many).  However, we spend much time trying to deny, hide or overlook them because we do not want others to see the “real” person.  Often we also try to blame others for whatever we feel we lack.  We put on masks before people around us and even before GOD.  The world does not like to see weakness, but also we erroneously think that if we are weak then why and how can God use me.

The Bible tells us that grace is given to the humble.  This means that we must look to Jesus not ourselves.  We must allow the Holy Spirit to be our helper and guide giving us strength and confidence.  It is not about me doing great things for God but allowing Him to work through me in love and with power.  Like the old commercial, “anytime, anyplace, anywhere, there is a wonderful world to share. It’s the right time, it’s the right place…” Or as scripture tells us, today is the day of your salvation.  Come and rest in Jesus.

Let GOD speak to both your head and your heart.  Then you respond to Him with your head and heart.  Ask for help to have the right balance between love and truth.  Our merciful Father who is full of mercy wants us to be whole human beings but we must trust, obey and make ourselves vulnerable in his hands.  Spiritually, emotionally, physically, intellectually, financially and socially we need the grace of God.  It is the safest place to be!

Count your blessings.  Be thankful for your gifts and talents.  However, be aware of ones shortcomings and be honest.

Confess to your LORD all that is in your head and heart, letting Him bring you to complete healing.  Let Him help you walk in the light and no longer wallowing in the dark recesses of your own mind.

Invite God to be your teacher.  We need assistance to bring every thought into captivity.  We need discipline so we can be thinking more of God than we do.  In an average day how much of it do we spend dwelling on the mind of God.  In our busy lives from our waking moment to when we fall asleep where are our thoughts, actions and desires.

My thoughts are about my employment responsibilities, jobs that need doing today (gardening, cooking, correspondence), finances, worries, concerns, hopes and daydreams.  I meditate on things that may never happen, reflect on unresolved issues of my past and people that have hurt me.  How to deal with certain issues. My various needs and how others should be serving me.  In addition, if I came into money what I would do with it (of course I would give some to God and the poor)!  After a day or so I appreciated how little God was in my thoughts.

With God’s help the negative must be turned around and made into an act of worship with which God will be pleased. Trust the Lord oh my soul and let all that is in me praise Him.


Retired

Recently, we celebrated my father’s 65th birthday (he looks very good for his age).  We had a great celebration for family, friends and even people we didn’t know before! 

People have many views about reaching the age of 65,  retirement!  Some look forward to it, others fear it and some just ignore it.  In my Dad’s case and for the family it was another opportunity to celebrate a life that has been richly blessed by God.  The blessings are so many with a number reflected in the speeches that we heard in the evening.   One of them is six children with their spouses and a number of grandchildren.  A marriage that has lasted for 43 years was another blessing.  Health, a roof over one’s head, food in the cupboard, etc, etc, etc.

As the song goes, “Count your many blessings, name them one by one. Count your many blessings see what God has done.”  My father would say that his richest and most valued blessing and privilege is the relationship that he has had with God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Without this his life would have no significance, purpose or future. 

The point was made that he has reached 65 not retirement.  He will not spend his time watching TV, in more recreational activity, taking up gardening or whatever else “retired” people do.  His continuing purpose will be fishing (a fisher of men), farming (planting the seed of the gospel into more lives) and wrestling (fighting the good fight).  He is not retiring.  Now he is freed up to pursue his real interest and passion for his Saviour and LORD with the support of a state pension.

We rest in Jesus. 

We carry the yoke that He gives to us.

We do the good works that He has prepared for us.

We work as Our Father in heaven works.

For us as Christians we never retire.  The harvest is ripe and plenteous but the labourers are few so each of us must continue to go where He has sent us and do as He requests.  If we do this then we will all celebrate at the most wonderful Marriage Supper of The Lamb as told in the book of Revelation.  That will be a great party.  So irrespective of age let us not get weary in doing good and do everything to the honour and glory of God in heaven. 

Show everyone and tell people about the real deal that God loves, Jesus saves and the Holy Spirit inspires and empowers.   “Well done good and faithful servant.”


Contemplating Lent

As we are entering the season of Lent many people will be considering things to give up for this forty-day period.  In the approach to Easter and with the release in America of Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of Jesus,” many will be considering and telling the old, old story.  Reactions will vary from person to person!  One thing we can all give up is to stop putting anything before our LORD.

There are many traditions that surround this time of year.  Easter bunnies, eggs, hot cross buns, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Passover, etc.  People will have different opinions on such things but we must ensure that our focus is firmly on Jesus.  Hebrews 12:2 NKJV states, looking to Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right of the throne of God.

Many churches in the UK for the Lenten season are taking a spiritual journey using Rick Warren’s book, “The Purpose Driven Life.” The sub title is, “What on earth am I here for?”  I was also introduced to a 40-day devotion by Tricia McCary Rhodes, author of "Contemplating the Cross" at www.soulatrest.com.

These authors and myself are trying to encourage us all to remember the love of God for all humanity and appreciate the sacrifice that was made on our behalf.  Let us not be too busy, distracted or casual as we approach and rehearse the momentous events that took place for us that night nearly two thousand years ago. Review Matthew 26-28, Mark 14-16, Luke 22-24 and John 12, letting the Holy Spirit guide your heart, mind and conduct. Then contemplate the following and make them personal:

Christ came                           - Praise God that heaven came to Earth.

Christ cared                          - Praise God that he has a desire to help me.

Christ compassionate         - Praise God that he reaches out to me.

Christ cured                          - Praise God that he brought me healing.

Christ called                         - Praise God that he knows me personally.

Christ crucified                    - Praise God that he died and paid the price of sin for me.

Christ commissioned           - Praise God that he has empowered me.

Christ continues.                 - Praise God that he will never leave me or forsake me.

May your life be filled with joy.  Jesus is the King of kings and Lord of lords. Satan or death could not hold him.  Jesus is the One and Only so let us again yield to His Majesty and truly celebrate in Him.


Prove All Things

A line from a movie stated that we should not assume, because when you break it down in three syllables, it makes an "ass out of you and me." This has been highlighted to me twice within the last 24 hours of writing this piece and numerous examples where I have made this mistake!

One was in the area of beliefs and the other about something I heard (or more accurately read). Sorry, to disappoint you but I will not give the exact examples as they might confuse the issue and you may not identify with them.

Let me ask what you believe about a specific issue, you name it. Can you support that belief logically and clearly to someone else from what the scripture states? If you can excellent. However, many of us assume certain things, we add thoughts or ideas to support our belief. Experience is important but does not replace the authenticity, inspiration and holiness of the Bible. Our assumptions the product of our human reasoning are not above God’s word. Yes, God does expect us to use our minds but they are to be influenced by the Holy Spirit which will not contradict the Word.

My basic point is the old adage, let scripture interpret scripture. As we read God’s Word let Him speak to us and make it live in our lives. Don’t let our concepts, thoughts, prejudices, etc blind us to the simplicity, purity and power of his beautiful book to us. For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow: it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight (Hebrews 4:12-13a NIV).

The second example is an email I received that gave certain information about a well-known figure. Many today love gossip, scandal and the worst in others. People say that there is no smoke without fire and if it’s in the papers or on the television it must be true. Let us be very careful about what we allow to get into our minds and then the information we pass on to others.

Any good author, researcher or speaker will always quote their sources. If a credible source can’t be quoted then ask yourself some basic questions like, do I accept this and should I be passing this on to others? Sayings like, "everyone knows", "it’s obvious" or "I heard somewhere" should rings alarm bells in our ears.

Scripture tells us to prove all things, hold onto the good and avoid all evil (1 Thessalonians 5:21 –22). Again, we must use the spirit of discernment that God has given to us. Check things out like the Bereans in Acts 17:10 – 11 who "received the message with great eagerness and examined … to see if what Paul said was true."

In my case I made various searches to find if the information in the mail was true but without joy. I went back to the person who sent it for confirmation which was not forthcoming, so the statement was retracted. However, harm had been done to a person’s character without proof. I went one step further and contacted one of the people named to try to gain the correct details. (This is not a recommendation but was done in a bid to verify the truth or not of the statement so any error could be corrected).

As Ambassadors for our King Jesus Christ we must represent him faithfully in thought, word and deed. We are to live by the rules of the Kingdom as he stated in Matthew 7:12, "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you."


Christmas - A Time for Reflection

How about this for an understatement, "2003 has been a tough year!!!!"

Reflect on your life throughout this year. Think briefly about world events.

As we approach Christmas and a New Year let us look up and join the heavenly host in singing praise to our Lord. He has brought us through another year. With His help let us lay out our stall for the year ahead. Things will not get any easier next year but let us pray for the gift of grace to sustain us and serve others. Remember that both truth and grace came through Jesus (John 1:14-17).

Like many of my family and friends I am tired, busy, concerned and feel like I am not achieving a great deal. My desire is to do great things for God but all I seem to manage is survival, working to pay the bills, sleeping so I have the energy to work, trying desperately to fit in my physical and spiritual nourishment. Not forgetting my familial responsibilities. They’re some problems in my life but all those around me seem to have lives equally and even more packed with trials.

One of my friends told me recently Christmas Day would be spent sleeping (I believe it). While we are suffering from fatigue and pressure we must not stop worshipping and doing good. So at this time of year let us deliberately slow down, refocus, recharge those worn down batteries and plan for constructive change in 2004. Don’t get caught up in the rat race. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 describes what many of us feel but gives hope. "… in every way having been troubled, but not having been hemmed in; having been perplexed, but not utterly at a loss; having been persecuted, but not having been forsaken; having been thrown down, but not having been destroyed…"

As Jesus said, "I have come so that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly" John 10:10b. The same author also minds us in 3 John 2, " Beloved, in regard to all things I pray that you prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers."

Christmas reminds us that God gave His best to us. It sings that He has the best interest of every human being at heart. It shows us that all people are recipients of His bounty. If you are lacking anything then go to the Father through Jesus, His beloved Son who will provide always.

Feasting

A few weeks ago we attended our annual church convention in Paignton, Devon. It is based on the Old Testament Feast of Tabernacles (Levictus 23) where we spent time in temporary dwellings. During the period we were away we meet with family and friends from all over Europe and the world. Time was spent in worship, prayer, study, celebrating, fellowship and occasional trips to the surrounding areas.

The theme of this "Feast" was Walking in the Grace of God. Services, which were held daily, were based on the theme by the worship leaders and the various speakers. It was a great time for one and all and we can’t wait till next year.

The Feast looks back to when God delivered Israel from Egypt wondering in the wilderness for 40 years. During this time God took care of their every need, food, clothes and protection. Today, many observe it to celebrate the fact that Jesus now dwells in us. John 1:14 "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."

As we live our lives we must all remember that Jesus goes with us everywhere we go and He will provide for our every need, everything will work for good. The Holy Spirit will be our guide and give us the inspiration we need in any given situation. Our reliance is not on the flesh but on God who lives in and with us. He always wins, we may lose the occasional battle but He will make us more than conquerors.

Our reality and purpose for living is the Lord Jesus Christ. Our desire like His is that all men will lift holy hands to heaven and come into a personal and vibrant relationship with Him. We must therefore set aside all the distractions, temptations or weaknesses and open every compartment of our life to God’s probing, purpose and provision. As a result with God fully living in us we will do wonderful things and live full lives providing a godly fragrance to all we encounter. All is to the glory of God and through His grace.

Friends, God loves us and sent His Son who in turn sent the Holy Spirit. So as 1 Peter 1:2-4 says, "Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.


Lovers Rock

On Saturday evening my wife and I attended a concert at the Hippodrome. It was the Queens of Lovers Rock and it was brilliant. The artists included Janet Kay, Carol Thompson, Winsome and Kofi (from Brown Sugar). There were also appearances from Musical Youth and Patu Banton with Angie Le Mar as the host.

The music took me back over twenty years with the various artists and some tunes which are firmly lodged in my memory. We danced with hundreds of other people and had reunions with friends we have not seen for years. The experience brought back many memories some good and some not. I remembered parties, people and many disagreements with my parents!

As the musicians talked and sang, the beat and lyrics reached deep down within my soul. My throat was sore from singing along. My wife says that I have had a permanent grin on my face since the show. It seemed my legs and arms were also tired from dancing. I soaked up the pleasant atmosphere that was in the auditorium. I was happy and slept like a baby that night.

I woke early the following morning and was reflecting on a wonderful evening and thanking God for the good things we can enjoy. In my musing I began to compare this evening with the Church (not any particular denomination) and the work to which Christians are called.

1) The Church should be the Queen of Lovers Rock, it is built on Jesus who loves us and whom we should love.

2) We should be singing the wonderful gospel message to this world (starting in our lives, homes and communities) that desperately needs it. A song that reaches deep into their soul and will transform their live.

3) We should like the Apostle Paul be gladly spent for the sake of the gospel and not get weary in well doing.

4) The Church should be open to all to come and enjoy the gift that God has given to the world.

5) We must enjoy the life that has been given to us putting God above everything and loving our neighbour.

There are many other parallels but I will stop there for now except to say that at the end of the evening the stars came out to meet their fans. It was wonderful to meet these talented people who wanted to share their life and talent with us. They signed my CD and programme and I was able to take a photograph with Carol Thompson.

I look forward to the day when Jesus returns and we will all be happy. There will be peace, love and I am sure lots of music from the angelic host when the Queen marries the King of kings. Please read Revelation 21.


Check up

Scripture tells us that we are living in the last days, but we must not fall into the trap of thinking that the King has delayed His coming, it could be any minute for each of us!

Friends, like the men of Issachar we must perceive the times in which we live and not lose our sense of urgency for serving, living and preaching the Lord of lords. The spirit of age has entered our minds, lives and churches and many have become lazy, complacent and stuck in old habits (sin).

Let us allow God to do something new through each of us. It is not to late.

The problem, sin, dream or whatever is not too big for God. Trust Him and come into His arms and love. "This is the crisis we’re in: God-light streamed into the world, but men and women everywhere ran for darkness. They went for the darkness because they were not interested in pleasing God. Everyone who makes a practice of doing evil, addicted to denial and illusion, hates God-light and won’t come near it, fearing a painful exposure. But anyone working and living in truth and reality welcomes God-light so the work can be seen for the God-work it is" (The Message John 3:19-21).

This week has been one full of dental visits for the family. I had my routine six monthly check-up. Like many I don’t like going to the dentist due to anxiety, time, pain and expense. I was going to cancel my appointment but received a reminder from the receptionist the day before of my pending visit with the dentist and hygienist for a scale and polish.

As I walked into the office I rehearsed the usual questions and comments heard over the years. In general your teeth are fine, brush regularly, floss, are you using an electric toothbrush, are you having any problems, etc, etc, etc.

This time was different! There were some problems and treatment had to be started straight away to reverse it. In addition, my next visit had to be in three not six months for a through review.

They advised me that I was not using my toothbrush correctly, as I was brushing over my teeth and not giving full attention to each tooth.

Further, the bleeding that was happening was an indication of inflammation and disease around my gums and that my teeth needed more not less attention.

Also I was biting my gums causing an inflection which was not healing so some gel was needed.

Why am I telling you this? Oral health is important but I want to draw an analogy with each person’s spiritual health and the need for an extensive check-up and follow the prescribed treatment.

In my opinion we tend to be shortsighted and in denial. There are things that need addressing, nothing new as they have been around for years and will not go away unless we take positive action. We have got into a habit in how we do things and seem reluctant to hear the blast of the shofar (the rams horn) calling us to accountability.

The remedy is to call out to the Lord as a whole and to a person. Truly giving our hopes and problems to the Lord but equally not using this as an excuse not to take action ourselves as required. Finally, to be willing to be challenged, accountable and make real not cosmetic changes. If we truly and fully give it all to the Almighty we will never, never, never lose out.

"But before I set aside my musings, I breathe a quick prayer. Lord, grant my eyes to see the real battles, the real issues, the real dangers, the real opportunities that intersect my path a thousand times a day. Wake me from a sleepy, careless state of mind. Protect me from the hypnotic hum of activities that make the eyes of my heart grow heavy. I ask it for me...that I might warn those I love."


Remember your Creator.

The Lord God can do amazing things with the weakest, smallest and most insignificant. His word has many examples how he can achieve so much if we humble ourselves before Him. Jesus tells us that we would do greater works than he did.

As Christians we are outnumbered, ridiculed and seen as irrelevant in modern society. The Church seems divided to even the most casual of onlookers. We don’t speak with one voice and statistics show the church is in serious decline. We look in bewilderment to the book of Acts asking what has happened and what is happening today? Will we be around in 10 years time?

Yet we remain hopeful in this generation. We trust in our King. Daily we pray and fast periodically for the individual health of all the saints of the Most High and the corporate health of the church, the body of Christ. We are told emphatically that the gates of hell will not prevail against His Church.

Saint Paul gives us the example of the human body and shows that each of us is important and vital to the healthy functioning of the body. No matter what part of the body or how many talents we have been given by the Spirit of God, He walks alongside. The Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is the one that gives us life, significance, grace and favour. Friends, we must believe, then think and act accordingly every day of our life.

Humble yourself putting yourself into the hand of God.

Exodus 4 God uses a rod to perform a miraculous sign through Moses.

Judges 15 God uses the jawbone of a donkey to kill 1000 Philistines through Samson.

1 Samuel 17 God uses one smooth stone to defeat Goliath through David.

1 Kings 17 God uses a little meal and oil to feed the prophet Elijah through a widow.

2 Kings 6 God uses a stick to make an axe head float through Elisha.

John 6 God uses five loafs and two fish to feed 5000 through a small boy.

1 Corinthians 1 God uses the foolish to turn the world upside down through Christians.

Pray now that God will help us in our weakness. We can’t allow the enemy to snatch away the good things that have been showered out from heaven on each and every one of God’s people. Let us speak, sing, praise and worship together. In the words of one of my daughters favourite songs, "Big enemy… BIGGER GOD".

One of the major areas we need to humble ourselves is in the raising of our children. We must believe, know and remember the word of God as we help to prepare and encourage the future generations. God will show us if we ask Him how to best raise His children.

These little ones are gifts, a heritage from God.

Children are not only the future they are very much a part of the present.

Through the mouths of the young God has ordained praise.

Friends, pray over them and with them every single day so they know their God from youth.

Jude 24-25 To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy -- to the only God our Saviour be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and for evermore! Amen. (NIV)


Worship

Man is an intellectual being, an emotional being and a physical being. Worship gives expression to each distinct aspect of man’s nature1. Due to environment, culture, hereditary and experiences we relate to God in worship in different ways. However, as the Gospel of John tells us, we must all worship in spirit and in truth.

The Holy Spirit interacts with us as a church but also as individuals, without contradiction. The issue is a real relationship with Heaven and with others. Whether we primarily worship, learn, serve or love intellectually, emotionally or physically we must bow the knee to Jesus and respect our neighbour.

Intellect: Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable -- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy -- think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me -- put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:8-9

Emotions: For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

Physical: Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God -- this is your spiritual act of worship. Romans 12:1

With any group of Christians people with each motivation will worship side by side.

All can be combined by remembering Deuteronomy 6:5, ‘Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength’ and Mark 12:30-31, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbour as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.’

Many issues can divide, but the Holy Spirit through love is what unites. It is He who gives us wise counsel when we ask, seek and knock so we will be at one, righteous, holy and perfect as the scripture tells and directs us. There is a dynamic interplay with our intellect, emotions and body.

Although we are partakers of the divine nature the pulls of the flesh occasionally returns. It distracts or pulls us away from God, our purpose and correct motives. As a result we make mistakes, sin, neglect, hurt others and ourselves. As the Psalmist said we must then return to the sanctuary. Lift our eyes to Heaven from where our help comes.

Please remember the focal point of our worship is GOD. Following the example of Abraham. He built altars, called on God, interceded for others, offered his son, etc, all parts of his worshipful life.

There are many elements of worship. Worship must be the way we live our life. It is dedicating all to Our Lord and Saviour as we agreed at baptism. Church services are one part of our worship. Preaching, singing, praying, serving, preparation, fellowship, praising, announcements, celebrations, etc, etc, etc, are parts of our congregational worship service. In our congregation preaching is and remains the primary tool.

I am not unique in how God works with me, as many others, through all three elements (mind, emotions and body). In corporate services I worship mainly in my mind. Others worship mainly through their emotions. Others worship mainly through their body. In each case the desire is from and toward God. To use other examples some give intellectual assent or descent to what is taking place. Some cry or give verbal praises. Others raise their hands, bow their heads or dance. This list is not exhaustible.

Please do not misunderstand. There is a lot of cross over between the elements and all expressions are equally valid in worship. It is ones response to a heavenly invitation for the Body of Christ to worship its Sovereign Head. All come to worship the One to whom all power in heaven and earth is given but must follow the instruction given on propriety. Before Him we all stand or fall.

Let us all pray asking God that we can be rid of all that interferes with true worship for all His people everywhere. Then to see it as a personal responsibility to help others who want to praise their Lord.

Genesis 12:8, ‘From there he went on towards the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD.’

Obedience

"Neither to the right hand nor to the left must the Christian turn, with regard to the reliance of his soul, in the matter of his eternal salvation. ‘None but Jesus’ must be the constant watchword of our spirit." (1)

Like worship, obedience is a constant theme and requirement for every creature under heaven. As a believer I must obey God first and then the respective ‘rulers’ to which God has given authority. The word ‘obey’ has lost its respect and meaning as part of the marriage vows and anti-establishment bias that exists. It still remains that we are all people under authority.

Jesus tells us to obey God. We must also obey the secular authorities and our religious leaders. Respect must be given to those God has given power. This calls for us to pray for vision (to see the big picture) and humility (not to place ourself above others).

There are many characters that reflect our condition in scripture. One is Abraham, called to obedience, an example of faithfulness but occasionally tried to do things his way. Like us he was not perfect but worshipped and obeyed being richly blessed by El Shaddai in every way.

I look at my life, called to faithfully obey, but I fall short sinning daily. The reasons include self-interest, lack of trust, doubt and fear. Thankfully, mercy is renewed each morning and I am given fresh hope. Praise the Lord. Like Abraham our merciful God protects us from ourselves and does not punish us to the level we deserve (Ezra 9:13). Often He actually gives a blessing, remember Joseph in Egypt through whom God saved many lives.

The hypocrisy of the situation is when I turn round judging my brethren seeing their sin as worse than mine. They see things differently, having different strengths and weaknesses, a unique relationship with God and a place in the body. Danger is also present when we allow differences of style to cause division not an opportunity to seek understanding. The sacrifices of Cain and Abel should remind us that sin is always knocking at the door.

Again Abraham shows us how to deal with people, not to strife with our brethren. He offered to others the choice of peace and prosperity. He gave respect to all people and was given respect from others due to the Lord’s favour. He obeyed God and respected people from kings to servants.

Once again God has given us a gift, i.e. government in His church. This is for the good, health and growth of the whole body. Ministers, who we are to obey, act as guardians for the stability of what was inaugurated on the Day of Pentecost. Elders are there to shepherd us, with all the work that it entails, until the good and chief shepherd returns. They watch over our souls. Respect, pray for and obey those who are placed in positions of leadership/service appointed by God.

Genesis 12:4, 'So Abram left, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran.'

Hospitality

"…Hospitality is seeing the stranger through the eyes of Jesus. It is choosing to look for Jesus in the eyes of each stranger… We choose to minister alongside others rather than ministering to them. We choose to let go of some of our own control…" (1)

The outpouring of worship, obedience and generosity is hospitality. Like Abraham or Lot we entertain the stranger to reflect the concern the Lord has for all people. They shared their time, home, food, protected and acted as both host and guest to the visitors (Hebrews 13:7). What God had given to them they shared and served without reservation.

Jesus in the last evening also was both host and servant to his disciples setting an example for us. We must not hold back what is good and right no matter what the cost may be to ourselves. It is better to have reputation for hospitality than to be thought of as skinflint, despite the risks and cost involved. When we take communion we are reminded again of heavens hospitality to each of us as we partake of the Lord’s table.

Most of us have a roof over our head, food for our next meal, some money in our pocket, experience or time. However, we make excuses why we can’t offer a cup of water to a thirsty person or visit those locked away, etc. Hospitality is a state of mind looking for opportunities to serve. Ways to be hospitable covers a wide panorama therefore, pray our eyes, hands and heart are open to act at the required time. As always keep God in first place then comes the stranger or neighbour from God (not just our friends and family).

In Revelation Jesus advises us that he is standing at the door knocking, both in a spiritual and physical sense. Will I let him in? Is my concern to be the host and/or guest in his presence? Do I hesitate saying, that until everything is perfect he can’t enter my heart or home? Does my lack of cash, crockery, carpet, conversation, cuisine or doubts about my conversion come before hospitality to the stranger, Christ?

God wants us to be whole and to live abundantly. He provides all we need to do it so we Christians can witness to the world in our everyday interactions.

Genesis 18:3-8 He said, "If I have found favour in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by. Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree. Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way -- now that you have come to your servant." "Very well," they answered, "do as you say." So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. "Quick," he said, "get three measures of fine flour and knead it and bake some bread." Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it. He then brought some curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree.

We have a generous God.

Through him we are richly blessed in every way. However, the Devil, society, etc, try to tell us otherwise. As we look around we hear of wars, we see disease, suffering and much more. Things don’t seem to make sense. Where is God?

Still the fact remains despite the evidence to the contrary we have a generous and loving God. In the words of the hymn, "Count your blessings, name them one by one … Count your many blessings, see what God has done." Too often we look on the negative side of things, we compare ourselves to those we think are better off than ourselves and we doubt God. Perhaps the main problem is that we try to bring God down to our level instead of letting Him raise us up in His Son.

God wants to have a personal relationship with us. His desire is to bless us, transform us and draw us closer to Himself. The King has blessed us with great privileges.

The blessings of life include drawing breath each morning and seeing God’s mercy renewed each day toward us.

In my life I have a home, food, friends, family, church, wealth, talent, time and much, much more. Sometimes I have so much that I occasionally take it for granted or forget to thank God for his generosity. Your life may be different to mine but you are also blessed and rich before God. Take time to look and offer praise.

Each day we have choices to make. Our primary choice is to give the best and first to God. It is our gift of worship to God who has given so much to us. After that we use what we have to reflect the generosity of God to enrich the lives of other people. This includes our nearest and dearest, the stranger and those we may think strange. It includes our church, worthy causes, neighbours, businesses, employees, etc, etc, etc.

1 Timothy 6:17-19, Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life (NIV).

It is not all about me and what I want. We don’t live our lives independently. I must love the Lord my God with all my heart, mind and soul. Also I must love my neighbour as myself. God has given us all we need to fulfil this dual responsibility in our lives by making right choices.

Let us all pray for a spirit of generosity.


Dedicated to all the victims of gun crime in our society.

We are a few weeks into 2003 and many people have possibly made and broken their New Year’s resolutions. It is good to review what we achieved during the last 12 months but we should also be looking to what we want to achieve for the months ahead. As someone said, "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail."

Many of us postulate for failure not visualizing success. We think and look on the worse side doubting the perfection of God. We see how close we can get to the edge instead of steering well clear of certain areas of weakness. Unlike Joseph we compromise with temptation instead of running away.

This year let us review three vital resources with which Our Father has blessed us and with His help obtain full advantage. We have time, treasure and talent. God has given each 24 hours each day to fully utilize. He has given us resources to steward. Through the Holy Spirit we have been given wonderful gifts to benefit the church.

We must prioritize our lives. With our time, treasure and talent God comes first. ALWAYS. We must worship Him with all our heart, mind and soul. Other areas of responsibility include our families, employment, church and friends. Obviously, in making these decisions we must ensure that we take proper care of ourselves with appropriate diet, exercise, sleep and education.

Pray and work to redeem time in these evil days so that we can live real lives.

Pray and work to enjoy and share the wealth with which the King has blessed us.

Pray and work to fully use our talents to build up the body of Christ, His church.

Philippians 4:6-9 says, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable -- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy -- think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me -- put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you."

As we move forward let the Lord renew our minds so we may properly focus to make good and right decisions.

A Christmas Message

At this time of year many of our thoughts turn to gifts, family and friends. On December 25th many will be exchanging gifts and spending time with loved ones. In all our excitement we must remember some very important things.

The traditional Christmas is about giving. It is a time to focus on the gift that was given to us from heaven. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). These words were beautifully set to music by Handel. Jesus was the Father’s gift to humanity. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). He has also given us the gift of life.

We must not fall into a non-Christian view of the reason why many celebrate the birth of Christ at this time. Because of what God has done for us through Jesus we now give from a sincere and cheerful heart without expecting anything in return. We give thanks for the blessings we have and wish to share our substance with others.

Our response to God’s generosity must be worship and gratitude.

As we listen to some of our favourite and beautiful carols take time to meditate on the words that reflect that momentous night when our Saviour was born and the profound impact on each of us. Let me encourage us to reread Matthew and Luke chapters 1 & 2 refreshing our memory of this wonderful account.

In all the festivities, give thanks to Our Father; remember we are His sons and daughters from whom He withholds no good thing. Give thanks to Jesus, our Saviour and friend, who gave His all for us. Give thanks to the Holy Spirit, who guides, comforts and bestows gifts on the church.

As the angel said, "Do not be afraid, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord." Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favour rests (Luke 2:10-14).

May the Lord bless us to truly worship him during the Christmas season as we live and preach the gospel. Together in our service to the King may we have a healthy and prosperous 2003.


Today as I look out of the window it is a gray and gloomy day. It is a typical winters day and it has been raining for a few days now. As I gaze out across the back lawn, green and wet my thoughts turn to a biblical hero, righteous Noah and the flood.

Hebrews 11:7 By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith. We like Noah live in wicked times and must stay faithful, finding ‘favour in the eyes of the Lord’ as we see in Genesis 6.

It is easy to compromise our beliefs and conform to the spirit of the age. As we look around most of us have comfortable lives living in comparative luxury. That’s not to say that we do not have trials and difficulties with health, finances and relationships. However, we must remain loyal to our King who never leaves or forsakes us. Our first priority is to heaven.

In the world we see the increasing influence on Christians of ‘political correctness.’ Can we preach righteousness, good and evil, without fear? Can we build a house to the Lord without worldly methods and interference? We see people who deny God but blame him for all evil and yet call upon him as a last resort. Society wants the good fruits of God’s way but without taking responsibility or doing the work required.

God’s people must stand firm like Noah in the face of opposition, ridicule and doubt to show the best way and the good things we can enjoy. Whether at school, work or play children of the kingdom must rise above our culture. With colleagues, friends, family and enemies alike we must live and preach the Gospel.

Let us stay in the ark. We must remain in the Church, in the Bible and in Jesus.
